Chapter 19

Trixie handed Jayne and me a cup of coffee and sat down in front of us. She had placed a package of cookies on the table in between all of us. She sat in the chair with her hands folded in front of her.

She looked very serious. It was an odd change from her upset and hysteria a few days previously. It was like she had completely entered business mode.

The inside of Trixie and Rosalind’s house reminded me of the bookshop. It was overcrowded with books and plants. It also had the homey additions of oversized and overstuffed furniture and bright, sunny windows. The walls and floor could probably have stood a solid wipe down, but with all of the things, I understood from my own experience with Hale Hall how hard that would be to keep up with.

With all of the witchy things around, I wondered if it was possible that Trixie did know her aunt was a witch after all. They did live together, so the logical conclusion would be that, in such a small living space, it would be hard to hide.

However, Rosalind did keep her study at the bookshop. So, perhaps she did hide that part of her life from her niece. I was able to keep my own magical nature from Cullen, who I lived with at Hale Hall. Though, to be fair, it wasn’t in quite so close of quarters.

“Did you see Sheriff Fitts leave here a bit ago?” she asked, looking at the two of us.

Jayne immediately looked guilty. I did as well. It was hard to avoid their very public confrontation.

“It’s okay if you did,” she continued. “I just need to know for the sake of what I’m going to tell you next,” she explained. She looked at us expectantly. Jayne and I exchanged a glance.

“We did,” I started. “We didn’t hear any specifics though.”

I felt embarrassed just telling her that. I didn’t like seeing other people’s private moments. It felt embarrassing and invasive. Like I was spying, even though we hadn’t done it on purpose.

She nodded. “Well, the sheriff had given me a ride back from the killer’s house. I had gone there to confront them.”

The way she said it was so matter of fact, but there was nothing matter of fact about what she said. The killer? She had gone to their house? I felt like I needed everything she had just said repeated with plenty of footnotes to go along with it.

I cocked my head. “Who do you think is the killer?” I asked. I was hopeful that the case was solved, but already the story wasn’t adding up.

“Clarissa,” she said confidently. “I just know she did it. I mean, the papers all said that there was a charm bracelet found at the scene of the crime. Clarissa wore a charm bracelet. She also had a key to the place. It was her. I know it.”

I was less sure than Trixie. I looked over to Jayne. She also seemed unconvinced.
